We're here with our penultimate AMETHYST: PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD original maxi-series episode: 3/4, covering issues #7-#9. Amethyst gets a love interest and a nifty wedding outfit, while continuing to prove that STEM subjects are way more important than English to being a Gemworld ruler. There are more sad, creepy deaths in families. Dark Opal gets even screwier as Amethyst thwarts more of his plans, needs a Twitter account.

Elise and Dave take a look at AMETHYST, PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD nos. 4-6, the point at which a 7-year-old Elise came in, in 1983. This run of issues features some of Ernie Colón's best artwork and two of the series' most memorable covers (as Elise can vouch), as well as some signs of hastiness. Dark Opal cranks up the evil; we meet new important Gemworld denizens; and the hosts ponder the question of what exactly happened to the eldest Princess Emerald.

Dave and Elise turn their attention to Elise's favourite non-team title from the 80s, Gary Cohn, Dan Mishkin, and Ernie Colon's AMETHYST: PRINCESS OF GEMWORLD maxi-series, and give an enthusiastic account of the first three issues (plus the preview in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES vol. 2 #298). Elise is depressed to remember which of the characters shares her birthstone, tries to do a feminist theory analysis of Amethyst's nipples. Dave gets excited about the prominence of a golden retriever as a character.

Dave and Elise tackle New Teen Titans Vol. 1, Issues 10-12. Ask whether the Terminator's motivations, or plans, really make sense; debate whether Wonder Girl is in danger of a dub-con or non-con romantic relationship; rejoice at the first appearance of T.M. Maple. Dave concludes that gods can only be totalitarians or do-nothings, and either way are jerks. Elise marvels at the creators' deft touch with the epilogue feels.

Elise and Dave look at a milestone issue of The New Teen Titans, No. 8, “A Day in the Lives,” and have a few nits to pick. We ask searching questions, like: is Wonder Girl's feminism consistently presented? (Answer: no, because the comics have to have as many hot babes in them as possible.) Did George Perez make a mistake when he drew college student Wally West's humble middle-class Blue Valley home as a mansion? (Answer: no, because DC comics need everybody to be super stinking rich.) We agree that Vic Stone has the best moments (finally) from this run of numbers 7-9. On either side of the centerpiece, The Fearsome Five return, and there's some even campier stuff with board member-murdering puppets.

Dave and Elise follow The New Teen Titans to the end of their first, rather shaky arc, all the way through to the breakthrough issue, #6. We contemplate the differences between the artistic styles of George Perez and Curt Swan (guest penciller of issue #5) and the editorial personae of Marv Wolfman and Ernie Colón and attempt to analyze the political philosophy of Trigon (“He's like Hitler and Satan!”).

In our first episode, Dave and Elise begin our celebration of the Wolfman/Perez Teen Titans run with the first three issues of the NEW TEEN TITANS (November 1980, December 1980, January 1981), plus the preview that appeared in DC Comics Present No. 26. We also tell our comics origins stories, share our love for the letters page and missives from Marv, and explain why, with misgivings, we gave up the superhero comics habit toward the end of the 80s. We hope you've got plenty of nostalgia for this decade and title too – they were great ones!
